  • Promote agriculture and agricultural activities as an alternative sources of livelihood ensuring food and income security
  • Promote empowerment of women and youth with their active participation and involvement into community based organizations
  • Promote and partake in various networks, federations and alliances initiated by like-minded NGOs, CBOs and Civil society organizations for addressing the core issues
  • Promote and develop linkages with Government institutions for getting necessary assistance related to development schemes and projects
  • Mobilize necessary resources to support the ongoing development projects at local, regional, national and international levels
  • Promote integrated education for empowering the CBOs and Federations
  • Strengthen local self-governance and enhance the participation of the poor in all the political processes

Thrust Areas
  • Make people aware of their right to education, education to rights, value education, health and environmental education and education to livelihood in all the operational villages of SDDS and its partner organizations. 
  • Network with like-minded NGOs on health issues.
  • Linkages with Government at all levels for health related issues.
  • Conduct various programmes on education for farmers, landless farmers, fisherman, etc.
  • Organize workshops and seminar on environmental issues
  • Awareness campaigns on environmental issues
  • Promote livelihood interventions which will ensure food & income security for women and marginal farmers as well as landless farmers and fisherman in all the operational villages of the diocese. 

  • Provide assistance to families through CBOs to promote livelihood activities in their villages focusing agricultural allied businesses.

  • Support the process of Sustainable livelihood i.e. economical, technical management related to agriculture and agro-based enterprises.


  • Linkages with Government machinery through Panchayati Raj institutions by incorporating in the overall village development plans.
  • Mobilize at least various programmes and schemes through Democratic Governance for women and other target community.

Development Programmes implemented by SDDS in the last three years

1. Awareness program: Health and hygiene, HIV/AIDS & TB, Value Education -As a part of medical awareness programmes were conducted among five schools and Colleges. Information was shared on HIV/AIDS & TB at six Colleges in which 1797 youths participated in the programme.  Two Eye check up camps were organized in association with like-minded doctors.  Medical Check up Camps was organized at two places in which various awareness sessions were conducted on best practices of health.  Information was shared in five schools and colleges on the importance and relevance of education in which 337 youths benefited from these programme.

2. Women Empowerment & Gender Sensitization - Gender Sensitization programme were organized for SHG women in 6 blocks of Sindhudurg District.  Various aspects of gender inequality and in equity were discussed in which we covered various aspects and dimensions of Gender Equity.
                                              
3. Agriculture Development Programme - Initially with the help of local NGO’s, the farmers were motivated to plant ginger, saffron, cereals at 25 villages and also as a part of organic fertilizer farmers planted gliricedia in their farm land. They also started vermin compost shades and compost preparation process.


4. Cooperative Farming Programme - As a part of the MIDAS programme farming was done by farmers from last 3 years. Farmers enthusiastically took interest for doing co-operative farming and they benefited. They planted mariegold, various kinds of Paddy seeds, Saffron and vegetable plantation. Initially we faced problems to get land but villagers and SHG members those who have land gave it for cultivation and because of their effort the model of Co-operative farming is working in this area.


5. Scholarship programme for youth – SDDS through “Help a Student Scheme” under Mother Teresa Education Trust, Pune has encouraged every year more than 50 students for College & Skill Oriented Studies for the last 8 years.  So far under this scheme 500 students were helped in pursuing their higher studies. 



6. Flood Relief Programme -
Three Flood relief programmes were conducted by the society for last three four years supporting 501 families with flood relief kits at Kharepatan, Masura, Bhironda, Sawantwadi, Paushi, Nerur and Banda with the financial help of CASA, Caritas India, New Delhi. Few houses were built at Vengurla for the families whose houses were collapsed due to the floods.


7. Capacity Building Programmes for Grassroots and Staff - SDDS organized various kinds of Short training programmes like Resource Mobilization, PME and programmes on PRI, RBA and HIV/AIDS for the Staff and Leaders.


8. Coaching classes for children - Around 250 poor, weaker and deserving students were helped through evening coaching classes.


9. Women’s Day Programme - The celebration of International Women’s Day is conducted every year at 6 centres in the diocese for last six years. The SHG women contribute the programme by performing dances and plays.

10.  Programme on Panchayati Raj Institutions - Seminars were held on Panchayat Raj Institution at 6 places. Total 405 people attended the seminar. The trained leaders from women and youth groups got elected as members into local self governance. 


11.  Small Income Generation Programme - As Income Generation Alternatives - Food Processing: Training was held on Papad & other food items making at Vengurla, Masura, Otavane, Karivade, Bhironda, Oros, Bhedshi and Sawantwadi. Total 248 people atteneded the training programme.  Income Generation Activities were held for last 3 years at SDDS Sawantwadi where different types of Chips, various types of juices, Candy, Jam, Mava were prepared and different food products likes  Laddus, Chakalis, Samosas, etc. were prepared by them in which 83 women participated and learnt on the various income generation alternative options.


12.  Animal Husbandry Programme – Animal Husbandry Programmes were conducted at 5 Centres.   Total 150 farmers attended the training. Resource Persons covered topics such as Types of Diseases, Preventive measures and First- Aid, Use of home remedies for prevention, Govt. Schemes on Poultry and Pig rearing, Cattle rearing, Importance of Hygiene for animal, Feeding of animal, Govt. Schemes related to animal husbandry, Types of cattle’s, Traditional practices of chicks rearing, etc. were covered.  Various diseases related to livestock were discussed and professional way of managing livestock development was highlighted. 


13. General Medical Camps were organized with the help of partners and Government Medical Department in which posters were exhibited on various health and hygiene issues.

About the Director

Fr. Milet D’souza is the Executive Director of SDDS, Sindhudurg (since 2013) and also a Governing Body member.  He has completed MSW (URCD) and the Development Dynamic Course of Caritas India in 2014. He has excellent rapport building skills. He is also well versed in the local languages i.e. Marathi, Hindi, Konkani besides English.

At Present he is also the Director of Justice and Peace Commission, SC/ST and OBC Commission and In-Charge of Lands and Properties of the Diocese and is handling various issues related to Lands and Properties
